Essential Oil Spotlight: Melaleuca

January 23, 2018

Today's oil is Melaleuca (meh-la-loo-ka). It's easier to say Tea Tree Oil. They are one and the same.

Hailing from Australia, the Melaleuca plant was a daily necessity for the early natives. The Aborigines would apply the leaves directly to the skin for a cooling effect. Eventually, the knowledge of Melaleuca’s numerous benefits spread worldwide, and Tea Tree oil is now frequently used topically for cleansing and rejuvenating skin, purifying and cleaning surfaces, and more.

Pretty neat, right? Well, when I first smelled this oil I cringed.

It smells like minty medicine, which is kind of what it is. I didn't use it for about 2 months because I didn't like how it smelled.

But then I had a really bad canker sore inside my cheek where I accidentally bit it while chewing. It was SO painful.

I had read that melaleuca can help with issues just like that, sores, abrasions, cuts, scrapes, etc. So in desperation I put some on my finger and touched it to the sore. At first it was numbing which totally relieved the pain. I applied it again later that night and the next morning the swelling had gone down and within 1 more day the sore was gone.

Now I use a drop in a glass of water and swish it around after I brush my teeth to help disinfect and heal anything going on in my mouth. And it leaves a slightly minty flavor behind.

You can also use Melaleuca to help with:

-dandruff

-toenail fungus

-yoga mat disinfectant

-razor burn

-diaper rash

-sunburn

-acne

-burns

and on... and on.. and on.

You can read more about melaleuca on the doTERRA blog.
